Churchill was a crook, so he didn't explain to anyone that it was the inherent vice of capitalism which was the cause of the inherent virtue of socialism not appearing to be a virtue at all, but a curse. But it is only a curse so long as 'socialists' fail to realise that it is the society as a whole, and only the society, which is the cause of the miseries it suffers. That most socialist societies that have ever existed have been fundamentally based on capitalist economics and have depended entirely on the use of currency to value goods is not a proof that socialism doesn't work, it's a proof that capitalism cannot be used to build just societies of any kind, socialist or capitalist.

Angeles National Forest Loop Fire (1966)

The  Loop Fire was a firefighting accident in the Angeles National Forest (see  10,000 Acres of San Gabriel Mountain Forest Gone Up In Smoke ) that claimed the lives of a dozen firefighters in November 1966.  The day after the disaster a comprehensive study was ordered and you get the results here . It's a quite impressive piece of work and it is still being used half a century later to train firefighters. But an investigation like this should have been ordered after every major forest fire, regardless of whether or not it involved fatalities .
