We have one hell of a fucking mess to clean up, so we can't afford to delay any more because delay carries double the cost: we have to put up with the existing garbage longer, and we add more garbage while we delay. So, nobody is going home from this Vietnam until we're done!

So, let's talk about what it is that means only Google and Apple can distribute apps. Do Google and Apple have a monopoly on secure communications? They must do, because there is no way that I know of by which anybody can securely distribute apps using the Internet and software pre-installed on devices when they are first bought. It is impossible, unless you have a secret means to do it.

Angeles National Forest Loop Fire (1966)

The  Loop Fire was a firefighting accident in the Angeles National Forest (see  10,000 Acres of San Gabriel Mountain Forest Gone Up In Smoke ) that claimed the lives of a dozen firefighters in November 1966.  The day after the disaster a comprehensive study was ordered and you get the results here . It's a quite impressive piece of work and it is still being used half a century later to train firefighters. But an investigation like this should have been ordered after every major forest fire, regardless of whether or not it involved fatalities .
