    Five Common Notions:

    1. Things each equal to another ting are things equal to each other.
    2. When equal things are added to equal things the wholes are equal things.
    3. When equal things are taken away from equal things the remainders are equal tings.
    4. Things coincident are equal things.
    5. The whole is greater than the parts.

    I didn't need to explain that in full, did I? Of course not!

Angeles National Forest Loop Fire (1966)

The  Loop Fire was a firefighting accident in the Angeles National Forest (see  10,000 Acres of San Gabriel Mountain Forest Gone Up In Smoke ) that claimed the lives of a dozen firefighters in November 1966.  The day after the disaster a comprehensive study was ordered and you get the results here . It's a quite impressive piece of work and it is still being used half a century later to train firefighters. But an investigation like this should have been ordered after every major forest fire, regardless of whether or not it involved fatalities .
