Social Media in the US is a Legislative Nightmare

We, or at least I, talked about the problem on Twitter in 2018. It is because the lawmakers didn't have advice from competent technical experts. Most of the things they tried to address with legislation were really technical problems, but the companies concerned were much more interested in having them treated as legislation, because workarounds in legislation are much easier to effect than hacking genuinely secure telecommunications systems.
The reason tech firms didn't want to talk about technical problems is because they were up to their necks in heinous crimes against humanity. Crimes like leaving tonnes of rotting meat in NYC in the weeks following 9/11/2001: see Big Tex Backlash Just Beginning.
