A Mystery

Here is a demonstration of GEM, Digital Research's graphical user interface for the IBM PC/AT and other hardware like the Motorola 68008 based Atari ST. Crash And Burn: The Amiga ST Story.
That system runs on a 5MHz 80286 with 256KB of RAM. So why can't it run on a smart phone or tablet  with a four-core ARM CPU clocked 250 times faster, and 2,000 times as much memory? But that's not the only mystery.
Around the time Toyah was soaring up the charts, I was designing computers, and within a couple of years I had a design for machine that was potentially far more powerful than an IBM PC/AT. The mystery then, to me, is I'm Still Looking for A Job. So is Toyah by the looks of it:
